Cleaning made FUN!

Growing up is hard sometimes.  Especially when it comes to cleaning your room.  I feel like a broken record when I keep asking my little munchkins, "please clean your room" over and over again.  I think the thing that is the hardest for me, is when it takes my kids 2 hours to clean their room when realistically  it should have only have taken 15 minutes.

It's a constant battle.  But it doesn't have to be!  If you have toddlers and young school kids...there might be a solution.

Introducing GUNNY BAG!

(Now, since the only bag I could find was pink, we made her Mrs. Gunny Bag...Mr. Gunny Bag's Wife :))

OK, so this is how it works.

1.  I give my kids a time limit.  For example 15 minutes to clean up the play room.
2.  At the end of the 15 minutes I pull out Mrs. Gunny Bag and start singing The Gunny Bag Song.  (See below)  And as I am singing, I look under tables and behind chairs and doors...making sure EVERYTHING is put back.  Now if your Gunny Bag finds a toy out she will EAT it all up!  And the only way for my kids to get their toys back is by doing an extra chore for each toy that is is eaten.
3.  This makes for a better motivation for them to clean up, because as the parent you don't have to nag any more.  You just let Gunny Bag do all the work.  It turns cleaning into a game.

Now, I have to tell you that I have seen this in action!  My second eldest daughter Syd, hates to clean up.  She would come from school and drop her jacket and backpack on the floor and always, always would leave her toys out.  And would be in her room for hours just whining and crying about how she hates to clean up.  Well, since Gunny Bag has come to our house, she is the cleanest child I know!

First thing she does when she wakes up is make sure that her floor is clean and that her pj's are put away.  This is so Gunny Bag won't eat anything while she is at school.  When she gets home she goes and puts her backpack and shoes away.   She is getting after me for leaving things out now too!  She is always telling me..."Mom, you better clean that up or Gunny Bag will eat it!"  (Awww...music to my ears!)

So hopefully this has helped the constant battle of teaching our young kids to pick up after themselves.  I know it has for my kids.  (At least for now!)  I'm not so sure it will work when they become teenagers...lol!  But one step at a time!
